Faux Kintsugi and My Mug

mugshot-small

A few years ago I bought this mug. It’s my favorite one ever. I paid $30 for it which is more than I would normally pay for a mug but I use only one, all the time and my prior mug was 16 years old when it broke, so I figured $30 was cheap, by the year.

A year or two after I got it It got a crack in it when someone who NEVER does dishes, did dishes. (And what am I going to do? Suggest he not do dishes anymore? Not likely… but I digress.)

Shortly after that I found the info on Kintsugi and tried to find the supplies to fix my mug. With no luck.

You can see the crack (which may not even go all the way through) on the face of the picture on the left. On the right you can see the y shaped crack inside the mug. That's where it leaks from.

A conversation this week prompted me to look into it again.  My goal is threefold. 1) Whatever I use can’t poison me. 2) It has to stop the leak. 3)I’d like it to look like the Kintsugi but I’m flexible.

Here’s what I found that I’m going to try (after looking at many products and reading many reviews and considering many price ranges.)

My guess is that this product should fix the crack all by itself. But that will just look like a fixed crack. I can live with that but want to try for the Kintsugi look so I’m going to add gold leaf over it.
